DESCRIPTION:
→ Nika is a striking woman with many masculine features, from her stoic expression to her well toned muscles. She is very lean and fit as a result of extensive military training, and she is rather tall for a woman. Her skin is tan, despite living in the north and being of Drachman descent, but this is due to the time she spent on a military transfer to West HQ, the tan just never faded. Nika's black/dark blue-gray hair is short for a woman, her bags being ear/neck length, the back of her hair only touching her neck. She usually keeps her hair up in a thin, short ponytail in the back, but leaves the front loose. Nika's eyes are a cold dark gray, which rather fits her hard gaze.
Nika purposely dresses like a man, concealing her female identity from those she knows as well as her fellow soldiers and superior officers. A pro at not being caught, she's even adopted a preferred "man's sense of style". The center-piece of her clothing is her navy blue trench coat, which she tends to leave open unless out in the freezing cold. When she is outside in the freezing cold of Briggs, she covers her mouth with a black cold weather mask made of a durable cloth.(Think Kakashi from Naruto) In order to hide her more "busty" features, Nika wraps her breasts in long white bandages to keep them pressed down. Over those bandages she wears a black tube top, and over that she wears a black long-sleeved shirt. The layers of clothes she wears may differ based on how much warmer the weather is, but she almost always sports her trench coat. She wears black pants paired with brown suspenders with brass colored buckles. The suspenders are useful since they prevent her pants from ever falling down in a combat situation. Her outfit is completed by her black combat boots and her black fingerless gloves with an open hole on the back of the hand and smaller holes over the knuckles.
When required to wear her Amestrian military uniform for any reason, whether it be drill, protocol, or a formal occasion, Nikita prefers to wear it to fit regulation completely, nothing out of place. Nika posture is rather tall and straight, she rarely slouches, though she will lean against a wall sometimes. But when on her own, Nika is more likely to let her guard down, to relax and breath easy, and therefore, not appear so stiff. She is extremely rigid in the presence of commanding officers or other figures that she feels she must not show any form of weakness to.

PERSONALITY:
→ Though not neccesarily a person with a split personality, Nika does have two sides to her: The image she wears and the image she hides; Nikita and Veronika respectively.
To begin with, Nika's outer image and disposition as Nikita can be described as stern, serious, cold, and distant. Nikita, as Nika idealizes the image, is a serious, capable, and respectable person. He is a man with no faults or weaknesses, an enigma renown for his peerless ability and mettle. He does not flinch in the face of terror. He does not back down from any task, no matter how daunting. No one can look down upon him, his image cannot be tarnished and his presence would command respect from those around him.
So in order to create this persona that Nika's (Naively) aspires to truly be, she takes careful measures to cover up any "weaknesses" she thinks she may have so that those around her can never notice them. Nika tends to distance herself from most other people and so she has very few friends despite her positive reputation as a soldier. Deep down, Nika is fairly cynical, believing that most people are inherently self-centered and naturally seek out openings in others for their own benefit. Nika is distrustful of people in general, only placing her trust in the few people she respects and admires.
Nika also believes that being ruled by one's emotions is a very unsettling weakness that promotes emotional frailness. Nika tries to suppress her own emotions, but her innermost feelings are quite strong, as stark contrast to the stolid facade she displays on the outside. Truth is, despite all her posturing, Nika thinks very poorly of herself, a result of a general inferiority complex. Nika loathes herself for who she once was and even when behaving more and more like the person she wishes to be, still does not love herself to any real extent. Nika tries to cope with this sense of inferiority to others by trying to elevate her status and ability and surpass everyone around her, as well as to exceed the low expectations those in her past had of her. This could be roughly translated into a psuedo-superiority complex, a common psychological condition developed by those with an inferiority complex. Nika may sometimes criticize others, but not in a blatant and verbal way, but instead in a cold, aloof, and subtle way. An example of this would be ignoring a childish joke made by a peer, or refusing to help up a clumsy comrade who had slipped on a puddle on in the hallway. This can easily be perceived as a true superiority complex by those whom encounter this sort of "too good to relate to you" attitude. This works well for Nika though, as she would not dare show empathy or sympathy to others, as it could be perceived as a weakness, and because cold, false superiority is a comfort she looks for, as she spitefully wants to be better than all those who would possibly see her as anything less than an equal. On that note, Nika cannot stand to be ridiculed or criticized. These sort of reactions from others puts a great strain on Nika, as she struggles with her anger and frustration and the unaffected role of Nikita she must display on the outside. But the most devastating sentiment anyone could possibly direct towards Nika would be pity. Nika cannot stand to be looked down upon nor can she bear to have others feel sorry for her for any reason. For these reasons Nika could react very negatively to even the most sincere sympathy, mistaking it for pretentious pity. It's even possible that her anger would cause her to temporarily shed her image of Nikita, as her emotions get the better of her.
Nika's inferiority complex often leads her to believe that any level of skill she has attained in her pursuit of self-improvement is not good enough. This leads her to push herself to improve her skills without any sense of satisfaction that would permit her to happily slowdown. Despite all of her attempts to make herself a "better" person through training and trying to change herself, Nika never really feels satisfied or happy about it, and her only real response to this unsatisfactory feeling is to try even harder, hoping that one day she would find the true feeling of accomplishment and confidence she's searching for.
Through her tireless training, Nika has taken the skills she learned in the military and developed them further into a set of extraordinary talents. Nika is an incredible sharpshooter, especially favoring handguns over standard issue assault rifles. Her accuracy, speed, and skill with a set of pistols has earned her the tile of "Gunslinger" among her comrades. Nika is also very adept in the art of hand-to-hand combat, utilizing basic CQC and military tactics to quickly subdue opponents. Nika is also known for being an able driver, capable of skillfully piloting and maneuvering helicopters, military humvees, and civilian vehicles. Her combination of skills has landed her in more secret ops missions than on the front lines.
Nika has a strong tendency to develop strong feelings of respect for those who prove to be strong, respectable, independent individuals with very admirable qualities, especially women of such a caliber. Nika isn't afraid to show respect and loyalty to those whom she looks up to, though she takes care not to follow them around like an underling, as it could prompt an image of one who lives in a "bigger person's shadow". While she isn't timid about admitting respect for another, Nika would never admit any feelings of admiration, though she does secretly have very strong admiration and attachment to those whom she personally respects.

HISTORY:
→ Veronika Alkaev was born in North City, Amestris on August 24th, 1988. She is the only child of former Drachman infantryman and notorious alcoholic Sergei Alkaev and Sasha Trotsky Alkaev, the daughter of a wealthy Drachman government official. The story of her parents early love and marriage is simple enough. Sergei was a Drachman soldier stationed on a military base near the Drachman capital of Moscow. He was quite the playboy back in those days, frequenting the local bars, a young and handsome name who was quite popular with the women. His promiscuous behavior had eventually acquainted him with nearly every girl in that part of Moscow, but none was as beautiful or captivating as the pampered and spoiled Sasha, the daughter of one of the most wealthy officials in all of Drachma. The two met one fateful day when Sergei was simply prowling the streets looking for young lasses to pick up and Sash, dressed as a commoner in order to escape the stiff and suffocating atmosphere of her father’s mansion (Which she was not allowed to leave unescorted). Despite the drab clothing she was draped in, Sergei was immediately infatuated with her radiant beauty. He brazenly approached her, asking for her to accompany him to a festival or sorts. She, taken aback by this bold act, timidly agreed. Sasha was always sheltered by her Father’s influence and wealth, the only men who ever had the pleasure of making her acquaintance were men that were granted permission to do so, personal friends of her father; older, snobby men, looking to establish a strong connection to political power and wealth through an arranged marriage. Long story short, the two hit it off, began meeting each other in secret, plans of love and marriage enveloped them. But Sergei was a common soldier and Sasha’s father would never allow her to marry a man of such low stature. Out of desperate and blinding love, Sasha concluded that the best course of action would be to abandon all that she knew to be with this man. Sergei went a-wall and Sasha ran away from the lap of luxury and the two eloped to Amestris to start a new life.
They came to North City with very little. Sasha pawned off her precious trinkets, dresses, and heirlooms, save for a necklace given to her by her mother. The two led a meager existence in the poorer parts of the city, subsisting on Sergei’s income from his job as a sanitation worker. But Sasha was simply happy to be married to the man she loved. But things never stay the same for long. As the two struggled day by day, Sergei drank more and more and Sasha’s belly grew bigger and bigger. Sasha thought she was happy, she would give birth to a beautiful child and be the family she had always dreamed of, but such fantasies seemed to grow dim as her beloved husband became a stranger to her. He stopped fawning over her, stopped concerning himself with her well being, he did very little other than drink and sit around the house. Eventually he began to treat her with very little love and tenderness at all. And thus the tragedy of the trapped housewife was born again, poor Sasha left to cook and clean for an abusive and neglectful alcoholic, hoping that maybe someday the man she had loved would return.
Life was brought into this world nevertheless, and Sasha and Sasha alone was left to care for her daughter. The man whom she had once loved never returned, only a violent alcoholic remained. His behavior grew worse with his drinking, and eventually it was uncommon for Sasha to end her day, lying in bed with many bruises painted across her aging skin. Day in and day out she lived this wretched existence, only her love for her daughter, Veronika, allowing her to continue.
For as long as Nika could remember, her house was a cold and frightening place to live. Her mother was but a shadow, flitting about here and there, cleaning the pitiful dwelling the called a home, silently serving her filthy slob of a father. But Nika kept silent too, for the slightest murmur could set her father off. It was actually better at times when he was drunk, for at least then he was clumsy and his senses were dull, but when he was sober, he was twice as violent, his hangover driving him to take his anger out on anything that dared to disturb him. Little Nika was taught to stay unheard and unseen in the presence of her father, and should he ever bother to take notice of her and ask anything of her, she should do as he says of face the consequences. Fortunately Nika’s father asked very little of her at all, only requesting that she pipe down or fetch him another drink. Unfortunately this obedience that was drilled into her mind from an early age would do very little to save her from her father’s angry outbursts. Though she rarely caught the brunt of these violent streaks, Nika would stay hidden from sight in shear terror, trying to keep herself from sobbing aloud as the sounds of her mother’s own crying filled the small, run-down home.
Nika grew up to be a very timid and quiet girl. She hated her father more than anything in the world, though she never dared to confront him. She disliked her mother for allowing him to ruin their lives everyday, but never told her. As she grew older, she learned that it was best to spend as little time at home as possible. She would often stay out late, walking about the more traversed streets or staying at stores or fast food restaurants until she was sure her parents were asleep. She would rise as early as possible in the morning, hurrying to school before she had the misfortune of dealing with her father or looking into her mother’s dull and weary eyes. Oh how sorrowful she always looked, Nika hated that look, it was a pitiful and wretched face with so little hope. Yet somehow she would give Nika a soft smile every time the two made eye-contact and for some reason that smile would haunt her, bringing bitter tears to Nika’s eyes as she quickly turned away. Looking back on it all, Nika knew she knew her mother loved her dearly, and yet Nika acted so coldly towards her, afraid to pity her own mother, afraid that she too would become like her.
Life away from home was hardly better. Nika’s family was poor and her clothes indicated just as much. She was never accepted by the superficial social cliques that defined the shallow society known as high school. Other girls would often sneer at her as she passed them in the hallways, talking in loud whispers that were easily audible to Nika. “I hear her dad is the town drunk”, “Look at the way she dresses, she looks like street trash”, “She’s so quiet its creepy, no wonder she has no friends”. Nika loathed the inner circles of pompous girls, but she never stood up to them. She once had a ‘boyfriend’, an arrogant adolescent who asked her out one day. Nika was flattered, as few people ever bothered to talk to her, but his intentions were made quite apparent when he left her after only a few days of dating, after she refused his advancements while visiting him at his house. He wouldn't take no for an answer, one thing led to another, and Nika found herself struggling to no avail, his barrages of force and emotional abuse forcing her into a sorry state of submission. Nika trudged home early that night, stripped of her dignity and any last bit of self-respect she may have clung to.
Forgetting all about her conditions at home, she walked in through the door without making any attempt to stop her tears or silence her crying. Her father, as drunk as could be, was alerted to her arrival by the noise of her walking through the door and tossing her bag against the wall. Normally Nika's late arrivals home were always overlooked, as her father was always long passed out by the time she came home. That was not the case this night, and Nika was greeted with her father's angry shouting, and in all of her distress and woes, Nika made the grave mistake of shouting back that night. BAM. The shock from the blow to the side of her face left her unable to react as she was knocked to the ground. The room began spinning around her, her vision began to fade, the blaring slur of her father's angry words were but a distant hum to her ears.
Nearly half an hour later, Nika found herself lying on the cold floor, a painful bruise covered the side of her face. She did not bother to get up, thoughts of despair filled her mind as she lied there, her father's loud snoring breaking the silence from the next room over. Nika was not sure what to do from there, what she would have to do to make her life worth living, to make things better for herself. She wasn't sure where to go or if anything would be better, but she was sure about one thing, she had to escape from here. Nika stumbled to her feet and quietly tip-toed to her room to pack her things. Only bringing a few changes of clothes and her mother's necklace. She left that night without a goodbye. Off to where? She could not say.
Days after her departure from the only home she ever knew, Nika found herself walking on the streets in downtown North City with only the clothes on her back. She had pawned off her mother's necklace a couple days before for a decent sum of money, only to have it stolen from her the day after by a common thug with a knife. He made off with her money and clothes, leaving her penniless. At the end of her fourth day on her own, Nika was lying against the wall of a convenience store, hungry, cold, and tired. She was at the end of her rope, nowhere to go and nothing left in her life. It was when a passerby tossed a half-empty bag of pretzels on her and walked away laughing with his friends over the act of "charity", that Nika had a grim revelation. Nika hated everyone, especially herself. Everyone thought they were better than her, and no doubt they were just that. Nika was trash, and nothing more, and as long as she let it be, people would always treat her as such. So Nika decided on an ultimatum at that very moment: Become someone who no one can possibly look down upon. That night, Veronika Alkaev ceased to exist. Nika sold the few clothes she had left to buy a scrappy set of men's clothes and a cheap knife to cut off her hair. She did the best she could to give herself a very short and even men's cut, leaving her with only an inch of hair. Now no one could possibly look down on her for being a girl.
Nika then enlisted in the military at North HQ, signing up as a male. If it wasn't for a chance meeting with Daigoro Ito, who was just going through North HQ on his way to Briggs, Nika might have not made it past the physical examinations. The Warrant Officer stumbled upon Nika whilst she was wrapping her chest in bandages before the examination. The two talked and after Dai told her that he wouldn't report her in, and even went as far as deciding to use his influence to get the commander of Briggs to pull some strings to keep Nika's secret from getting any farther than a selected female doctor to examine her and not say a word. All this on the condition that Nika would consider joining Dai's personal squad sometime in the future. Nika lucked out by meeting Dai, and though she didn't understand what Dai saw in her to want to help her, she did not question it too much.
Nika's military career afterwards went roughly at first with basic training. She wasn't used to the strenuous activity and rough training, but her determination to succeed and become stronger pushed her to eventually pass basic training with flying colors. Nika was later transferred to West HQ after graduating from basic, where she pursued a path of developing her skill in military combat. Nika's tireless pursuit of improvement earned her a reputation in West, especially for her ability with a pistol. She earned the title of "The Gunslinger" among her comrades and was actually respected for her merit on the battlefield whenever brief skirmishes with bandits erupted. But her cold demeanor also gave her a reputation of being anti-social and enigmatic. Despite all her fame, Nika was never once found out for being a woman since her encounter with Dai. Nika continued to serve in West as the leader of a special task force for the swift removal of militant groups and bandits in West Amestris, and her peerless fighting ability and versatility on the field reached as far as Briggs, where Dai was reminded of the nervous girl in the men's locker room. Daigoro requested Nika's transfer to Briggs where she would become a member of his squad, and Nika, now a master of her emotions and hardly the frail and nervous girl he had met, willingly accepted the opportunity. Besides, he had seen her as a weak and scared girl that day she met, she didn't want him to think of her as such a person, she had something to prove to him as she had proven to everyone else.
