DESCRIPTION:
→ Shula is a very petite young woman with soft, tanned skin and a rather lithe build to suit her size. Though she is half Amestrian, her Ishvallan features shine through and are very prominent in her facial features and genetic colorings. Her eyes aren't as red as a pure Ishvallan's, but are more of a mahogany red with a warm brightness to them, leading to her common nickname of "Bright Eyes." Her thick hair is naturally white, but to give herself the appearance of looking more Amestrian she regularly dyes is a light honey-blonde colour, even though the white has a habit of not taking to the dye for very long and streaking through every few weeks before she dyes it again. Her bangs are short and a little uneven with a little fringe around her face, and a thin length of hair is pulled into a braid in front of each ear; the rest of her hair is often pulled into a low bun.
At work she prefers her uniform be pants as it gives her more range of motion (and no chance of being up-skirted), but off duty Shula prefers to wear bright, warm colours. Many people find her style of dress a bit odd as it looks more traditionally Ishvallan than anything and is often seen wearing breezy skirts that go at least past her knees, scarves around her shoulders or waist, and lo silky shirts tucked into the skirts. Her antimony bracelets are always on her body, but when she's not at work the jewelry expands to include arm bands, dangling earrings, necklaces and ankle bracelets, and is more likely to wear them if they jingle.
Though Shula isn't tall, she is rarely caught slumping or slouching; partly because as a dancer it's bad posture, but also because she's very proud of how far she's pushed herself to come, despite the obstacles in her life. Her steps are short but very quick, and her movements are fairly fast. Shula's soft mezzo speech is very clear and though not always very floral or poetic, she is very articulate and knows how to make a point when she has to.
Since the carnival, Shula's slowly come to a few epiphanies and revelations, and since Central's destruction her look has changed once more. Off-duty her attire has become almost completely traditional Ishvallan wear, including regularly wearing scarves several meters long that wrap around and across her body. The colours are still bold, vivid and usually patterned, but tthe overall look is rather conservative. Her hair, which for years she has maintained as blonde, has been stripped of the artificial colour and is now back to its natural white with hints of silver and lingering traces of faint gold. Her warm, beaming smile is still there, even though her makeup is now more natural-looking and less obvious. There are faint scars that pattern her left side, most too faint to see or obscured; the two most noticeable are a short thin scar going across the outside of her left thigh, and a large almost x-shaped scar at the bottom of her ribs and side on the left from when the bombs went off. These are typically concealed by clothing, but the scar on her side can be seen when she wears her choli tops and doesn't havea sari on top of it.
Finally her truest self, Shula’s appearance is a perfect blend of two worlds that were once deadly enemies. Her work uniform has been modified to cater to her religious needs, Shula wearing a kurta tunic, pants, and sari, all in Amestrian blue and trimmed in silver. A bindi almost always graces her smiling face, and dark henna patterns stain her hands and arms with prayers for a happy and long married life. Her hair has grown considerably and lost all traces of gold, the braid now hanging down past Shula’s thighs and is even seen down while at work thanks to Spade helping to coax his little love to relax and learn to live. A tiny gem nose stud sparkles on her left nostril, and even off-duty Shula has found peace in melding her traditional Ishvallan clothes and more modern Amestrian ones, or spends her days at home relaxing in her dance clothes.

PERSONALITY:
→ Shula is very warm and sweet, and suffers from being an eternal optimist. She honestly tries to see the good in everyone and is a little naive about most people because she was allowed so little interaction with them growing up, which can get her into trouble easily if she isn't careful. Despite her slight social inexperience, Shula is not afraid to venture out into the world to experience it completely. Much to he mother's chagrin, the girl is very eager and curious about the world and its people and holds little fear of the unknown, seeing the hidden variables as the "exciting bits that make it all worth the trouble."
Because Shula was kept inside for so much of her young life and knows
that she won't live long into her adult life, she honestly feels that putting her time to good use by serving in the military will give her life some meaning so that she wasn't a waste of everybody's time, effort and emotions. On the same token, because she knows what will happen soon, since she left home she's made an effort to keep all of her friendships very casual and not get too attached to anyone, and has managed to skirt around romantic relationships completely. She absolutely hates the idea of hurting more people than she will anyway when she dies, so while her warmth, love and happiness are sincere, Shula does her best to keep everyone but her family from getting too close to her emotionally.
Apart from Shula's friendly nature, she is also rather sarcastic and very competitive.. Being told she couldn't do something (usually because of her physical limitations) so often when she was young has made her more driven to obliterate the challenges set when people tell her the same thing as an adult. Always wanting to see the next big piece of the puzzle, Shula strives to challenge herself and learn all that she can in hopes of putting herself to good use in life.
Over the last several months since the Carnival, Shula has become increasingly reflective. She is still her normal happy, bouncy self, at least on the surface, but she has become more thoughtful and taken to devotional meditation. She's been striving to make sense of the lessons she was given as a child, seeking to make herself alchemically whole and attain understanding and balance within herself and the world around her. Shula is still herself, however as time has gone on and so much has happened, Shula has stopped hiding the self she really is as she devotes much of her time to studying and researching and is seeing the world more for what it is and less for how she wishes it would be. She is not the same little girl that started at South, and has steadily matured into a young woman who is becoming less afraid of the world. She has new cause and purpose within her heart, and she is now more determined than ever than to live her life to its fullest extent.
The passing of time always brings about great changes, and Shula has had time to let her personal wounds heal as she has grown upward and outward into a beacon of love in its truest sense. Shula has taken to loving South with all her heart, seeing the people as her people and her family, and will do anything to make their lives better. Nurturing and motherly, the young woman has become seen as and called the Sweetheart of Amestris, and loves knowing that the people love her in return. She’s become incredibly devoted and works to find a balance between her duty to country, Chancellor, and fiancé. Life is a beautiful thing, and Shula looks forward to the challenges that tomorrow will bring, if only because the love she gives and the love given to her makes her strong enough to face them.
LOVE:
→ Being warm at all times, spicy food, antique books, cooking, all dancing (but especially fire dancing), fusion music (combining two different cultural styles in music), fruity drinks with umbrellas in them, warm, bright colours, sweets and desserts, children, dogs (and most animals), meditating, sewing, Acra, her freedom, peace, happy endings, Csilla, anything chocolate, animals, children (especially Sal!), knowing someday she’ll marry, Spade with every fiber of her soul, pancakes, sleeping in, cuddles, kisses, being woken up with kisses, super hot baths, flowers, her garden, being in the Floating Gardens, meditating, dancing, her detective novels, figuring out whodunit, love stories, knowing she’ll be happy and with Spade the rest of her life.
HATE:
→ COLD, being cold and wet at the same time, being sick, being told she can't do something without a valid reason, icky wet slimy SLUGS, pickled vegetables, fall and winter (because everything is dead), wearing too much black at once for a long time, having to hide her secrets from her friends, senseless killing, being owned, being helpless, not having a solution to a problem, missing people who are gone, badly-written books, being away from Spade for too long, sad endings to love stories, feeling useless, being dead.
DEEPEST SECRET:
→ Shula is sick and she knows it, and the only other people who know are her immediate family. Her grandfather pulled some strings in order to pass her medically so she could join into the military; she does everything within her power to keep this information off her record and keep her friends and coworkers in the dark about it as it's none of their business and it could jeopardize her career that she's worked so hard to earn.
→Her ailments have been cured, but Shula now holds an even bigger secret that could kill her and anyone she tells. There are two alkahestral arrays within her body, one working as a super immune system and guarding her from all foreign corruptions within her body, be they viral or chemical. She is now immune to all disesases and toxins, no matter what the dose, as the purification keeps her cells from changing from their purest and most perfect state. The second array is of contortion and for Raistlin's use only, hiding somewhere near her heart and made from her very tissue. She cannot tell anyone that she is under Raistlin's control, nor can she risk ceasing to be useful to him lest he kill her as she searches for more information about human transmutation and how to create a philosopher's stone.
→Shula hid her forbidden research before she died
IDOL:
→ Shula reveres and looks up to her grandfather more than anything, but beyond that no other idols.
→ Spade. He is her best friend, hero, and soul mate.

HISTORY:
→ Shula was born in South City to Amira and Phillip Brighton, and spent the first five years of her life there until her parents divorced and she moved with her mother and brother to a small town southwest of South City called Meissen. Despite the divorce, Amira remained very good friends with her ex-father in law, Ulrich, and was invited to live with him so he could help raise his grandchildren. Shula was a very warm and affectionate child, and living in the big old house her grandfather owned only piqued her curiosity as one day she found her way into the alchemist's library and began to ask the question that begins the life of any promising scientist: "What's this do?"
The winter after Shula turned six was the first time the little girl got sick and didn't bounce back almost immediately, catching first a severe respiratory infection that quickly became pneumonia and relapsing twice more before spring. It was nearly summer before she was allowed out of bed, causing Shula to be switched to homeschooling that year since she was so far behind. Being stuck in bed all day gave her ample time to catch up and even go a little further as her brother, Aaron, would come and do his homework on her bed and let Shula read over his shoulder while he worked. When she was finally well enough to go out and play again during the summer, she took full advantage of that time, spending most of her afternoons sunning herself and swimming, despite the reocurring ear infections that followed all summer long.
As the next winter came and Shula grew sick again she was taken to a specialty hospital in South City where she was kept several days for treatment and testing, and was eventually diagnosed with CVID. Her grandfather paid for what treatments he could afford, but the illness made Amira decide completely that letting Shula be outside of her home would expose her to too many things that he body naturally couldn't fight off. The majority of Shula's time was spent in her bedroom, the highlight of her day being when her brother would come to do his homework in there (when she wasn't contagious), and her grandfather coming in to tell her stories about things he'd done as an alchemist in the military over the years. The alchemical
demonstrations never ceased to amaze Shula and only made her grow more insistent that Ulrich teach her what he was teaching her brother. Amira was more than a little against Shula and Aaron learning alchemy, seeing it as an affront to their Ishvallan heritage and how it had been used to slaughter their people in the past, but Ulrich wouldn't deny his grandchildren the opportunity to broaden their horizons. It went so far as Amira locking the door to the library and Shula's room after telling her no repeatedly; it was an insult to their culture and history and she was too sick to master alchemy due to how physically demanding it was. This only spurred the girl on further to prove her mother wrong and taught herself how to pick locks.
The years passed and looked nearly identical to each other as Shula grew up, thwarting every attempt of her mother's to keep her from learning the advanced chemistry. Her grandfather was extremely encouraging, every few weeks bringing her something more challenging to learn until the day her brother was accepted as an alchemist in the military. With only the most loving and encouraging of intentions, Aaron sent a message to his little sister, showing him in his uniform and proudly displaying his watch with two simple, meaningful words in the note: "Nya, nya!" Irritated and sulking a little, Ulrich called Shula into his library and took her arm and a shiny black stone. Without explaining anything, he transmuted a thick bracelet around her wrist. It was very pretty, and too thick to be cut off her hand safely and too small for her to take it off over her hand. Her grandfather merely smirked, took a sip of his brandy and said, "Then become an alchemist... and take it off yourself."
Since then Shula pushed herself further to learn as much as she could, becoming quite adept at general alchemy, most days waiting until her mother left for work to sneak out of the house and into the shed out back, and others using a ladder she had transmuted from the house's siding. Her fire alchemy came through years of trial and error on the side, initially wanting a better way to control the flaming poi she danced with. Eventually she worked out a practical use for something she'd made that originally was just a form of expression. Without her overly-protective mother's consent and keeping her as in the dark as possible, Shula spent years practicing and learning in until she finally passed the military exams (after going to Central City with Ulrich for treatment at a different hospital for her birthday) and finally joined her brother and grandfather as a state alchemist. The first few years of her career were stationed at the HQ in South City where her grandfather worked until he retired, around which time her superiors transferred her to Central HQ, feeling she could be put to better use there. Shula obeyed and moved north, and is more than pleased that Ulrich followed shortly after, insisting that Central City would be a better place for a retired alchemist.
~~~~~~~~
Since arriving in Central City, Shula has quickly begun finding out how much harder and more involved it was there and that everyone isn't always entirely honest about what kind of person they are. Taking time to go and enjoy herself before starting at Central HQ, Shula got lost when she wasn't paying attention where she was going, and upon asking the wrong kind of person for help, found herself shoved into an alley and ganged up on by he and his friends. Luckily, before any serious damage could be done, Shula found herself saved by someone who had been walking and seen her talk to the shady man. Mistaking her for a truant child, a militant named Acra Schiwatas followed them and saved the petite blonde from certain harm.
After helping Shula calm down over a cocoa and some cheesecake, Shula found out that her alchemically-inclined saviour was also a bit of a conceited jerk who refused to accept that she really was 21 and worked for the Military. It didn't really help her case when he walked her home and met the tall grandfather that he assumed she was living with. They both figured they'd never see each other again, and thought nothing else of that odd afternoon.
Beginning to settle into her new home and work place (and determined to get a feel for the layout of the area and not get lost again), Shula went out for another walk. After finding a store where she could get her fire dancing supplies, as well a small place that sold Ishvallan home-cooking, Shula met someone she never thought she'd meet... The Fuhrer. However, despite the odd looks Hild was getting from everyone, Shula had no idea that the young woman exclaiming her boredom was her boss, and didn't find out until after it was suggested that the afternoon be killed at a free concert in the park. Hild was a surprisingly funny and sweet young woman, and by the end of the concert even though she had to go back to running the country Shula found herself with a friend she never thought she'd have.
Settling into the swing of things, Shula went about trying to conquer the mess of her office and sorting paperwork. During a round of getting some things signed, she happened upon the office of Acra Schiwatas... sergeant, not major or State Alchemist. After a heated discussion and Shula having to take out her military I.D. to prove her age and rank, she left his office nearly in tears and with Acra feeling more than an ass. Calming herself, Shula met an unusual man wandering the halls and looking for Spade. Seeing that the security was too lax in the building, Shula and Mr. Dauthi went back to her office to get clearance to send him up, only to find that he was not only not military personnel officially, but a mercenary. The well-dressed merc was charming and friendly, and also specialized in fire alchemy. After Acra came back to her office to apologize, Mr. Dauthi offered to help the two of them improve their heat-based alchemical skills. More than happily Shula accepted the offer in hopes of it being the edge she needed to pass her exams.
~~~~~~~~~
After passing her exams with a nearly perfect score, much to her bouncing happiness she was appointed a State Alchemist and promoted to Major. While a bit let down that Acra didn't get to finish and pass the exam with her, he did share in her happiness that she had passed, celebrating with a nice dinner out and dancing. Shula herself was quite pleased; she had proved her life-long point to both of her parents that even though she'd had more obstacles to climb over that she was just as capable of living a full life as the rest of them and would earn that right no matter what. Despite the repeated pleas of both her parents to leave the military now that she had proved that she could do anything she set herself to, no matter how dangerous, demanding or exhausting, Shula stubbornly refused, arguing that the promotion will allow her to better care for herself while the work lets her enjoy life for what it is rather than what she's limited to.
After Acra passed, Shula surprised her best friend with an updated version of the gloves she'd gotten used to seeing him wear, making them out of Kevlar with copper filaments to conduct better and keep his hands from burning so badly. As spring came up Spade announced that the Military would be manning Central City's annual festival. Everyone had a specific assignment, and Shula's was to check all the rides and booths to make sure they were being operated correctly... Essentially, she was assigned to go have a good time at her first carnival. Unfortunately chaos broke out, starting with finding rides out of control with no operator and forcing her to figure out how to stop a rampaging teacups ride. The carnival only went downhill from there as explosions, a tornado and a fire broke out. While people ran screaming, Shula put her alchemy to work as she tried to control the fire of an eatery and row of booths enough for people to get past safely in that area. The fire was completely consuming the fairgrounds, though, and after several minutes of holding back what she could the smoke was beginning to choke her too much. Her throat closed as she tried to run to safety, in the end carried to the parking lot by Acra's butler and taken to the hospital.
Once released from the hospital, several days were spent at home to recover and wait for her voice to heal from the breathing assistance used on her. Needing to get his mind off breaking up with the girlfriend he'd taken to that carnival, Acra decided to come and visit with Shula and keep her company. Trying her best to fix her best friend's heartache, Shula invites him in and offers beer to try and make it better, as well as offering an observation on the kind of women he normally pursues. Being that Acra likes to spoil his women, the girls he usually has hanging off of him end up being gold-diggers who only want him for the presents and chance to be with the heir to vast fortunes rather than being with him for him. While getting more beer, Acra realizes that Shula has more bottles of pills than food in the house and has Wallace go shopping and bring it all over. Ever-observant, Wallace notices Shula's bills and letters from doctors and concludes that Shula can't afford both; she explains to the butler that it's fine but asks him not to tell Acra. Shula cares too much about Acra's happiness to let him worry for her, and as she sleeps Acra realizes that the kind of woman he needs and wants is the woman asleep with her head in his lap and admits to the sleeping girl that he loves her. He knows she doesn't love him back, however, and hopes that even if she never does return his feelings that she'll always be his friend and by his side.
]Hoping to get her mind off things and relax a little, Shula agreed one night to go out with Spade and a few of her coworkers for drinks. The little jaunt became an adventure all the way to East City... to a strip club. A little uncomfortable and embarrassed, the only thing she could think of to do was order a drink and try to blend into the wall when Spade and his younger brother joined her, her boss flirting playfully and his brother attempting to (and failing to his chagrin). Her luck, just as she started to relax the club accidentally caught fire. No sprinkler system working, the fire spread and Spade worked to get everyone out of the building quickly. Shula, calm and in no danger of smoke inhalation like at the carnival, put what she had been working on and attempted at the carnival to work to pull the fire toward a point she controlled and put it out successfully.
As things at work quieted since the fires, a small field trip landed on her desk, issued by higher-ranking officer that she didn't work for, not knowing he had a beef with her older brother. She was being assigned to go to West City where, after civilians protested having more military housing be built in civilian neighbourhoods while things were already tense and under duress, a soldier went missing and construction was stopped. Being that housing is specifically what Shula handles, the job fell to her, uncomfortable as she was with it. To her luck, the mercenary who helped her pass her exams already knew about the soldier who had vanished, and unsure of foul play and concerned for her safety, Murazar was "assigned" to go with her. However, the details become trickier and trickier as she'll have to learn to fully trust a partner she'll be working with enough to come clean about what she's hiding lest it surface to her military record and risk her career....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things were quiet once she and Murazar returned from the investigation, Shula now more grateful than ever to have friends like him that she knows she an trust with her life and that care for her and becomes determined to become stronger so that she can one day protect them. However, it's hard to protect anyone when you're trying to protect yourself during a war. After Aerugo sitting on the crater that was South City for nearly a year, General Aeries declared that that was their crater and that they were taking South back with or without anyone's approval or consent. Packing her important personal things in a tin box and hiding it in her house, Shula leaves with Central troops to fight Aerugo for South. She and her squads were ordered to push to the south of South and away from the crater in hopes of wiping out some of the Aerugese supply lines and helping to keep more from coming in. Shula set many glass traps in the area, catching as many of the enemy soldiers as she can as she tries to maintain her moral standards of “no killing”, but her own radio is lost in the process. Eventually she was completely separated from those she was commanding and was too busy trying to stay alive to find them; without a radio Shula was unaware that the Aerugese troops are retreating, that Creta was now attacking and all forces were going to West and Central to fight, or that Central forces have already left... without her.
After setting another trap and hiding behind an overturned Jeep, Shula found a radio and called Spade to see if her orders were still the same as she moved to hide behind some large rocks. Trying desperately not to panic as Spade filled her in, he promises he is sending a helicopter to get her and bring her home and that as long as she leaves the remaining Aerugese alone she should be safe. While waiting there Shula was under direct fire and trying to deter soldiers with walls of fire, unaware that the General of Aerugo was at that moment approaching her, looking for straggling soldiers that could be useful. Much to her shock he is half-Ishvallan like her, but that they are nothing alike as she found there was no escaping Raistlin as she was stripped of her dog tags, gun and alchemical bracelets. The gun pressed against her heart and was about to stop its beating forever until Shula's racing heart and panicked breaths gave way to a coughing fit and gave the man an idea.
Seeing an opportunity, Raistlin used his alkahestry to diagnose and alter Shula's condition, taking away the years she had left to live and reducing them to mere days. He gave her a small radio and told her to call him in the next few days when she had come to understand her situation better, and that if she chose to contact him that she couldn't tell anyone or she would have no hope for living. Shula was released and Raistlin left her alone to be picked up by the chopper and taken back to Central. Central was beyond a wreck, not even recognizing that it was her home anymore. Shula was deeply spooked and not in the mood to be touched or talk to anyone, but Spade had sent for her, so she was brought to where he was... the infirmary tent. Spade was badly hurt, and when he woke up to a crying Shula he filled her in on what she'd missed; Shula was very distressed to find out that Josef had died earlier, that Apos was leaving them, and that her best friend Acra had been shot and flown to a hospital some time ago. Spade tried to console her, but there was little comfort to be had on the issues, Shula terrified from fighting, horrified by the loss of life all around her, dreading the idea of losing more of her friends, and still shaking from her encounter with Raistlin earlier.
Bombs planted by RIOTE rocked Central, destroying HQ and the blocks around it. Buildings were instantly collapsing from the bombs and fires that spread rapidly, including the infirmary tent and the building next to it. Shula was pushed out of the way of a large chunk of falling pillar by Spade, but curling inward to protect her head was not enough to protect her side from other large sharp bits of debris. Spade's injuries were only worsened by the pillar coming down against his chest, and Shula struggled to keep her boss from bleeding to death though her own ribs were broken and bleeding badly out her side. Much to their surprise, Apos had turned around and was coming back, just in time to scoop up his comrades and get them to the nearest air lift to the military hospital. When Shula finally came to, surgeries were over and her wounds had been cleaned and dressed, but she found she was still having a lot of trouble breathing. Terrified and restless, she begged the nurse to let her see her friends and was wheeled to Acra, who was more than happy to see her and joined her to see Spade.
Days in the hospital were hazy, Shula fighting to stay conscious between doses of heavy pain meds and various testing procedures. Her body had been put back together, yet she wasn't improving. Between tests she went to see Acra again, finding him hard at work on something that looked like it came out of Megaman and forced him to take a break for well-needed snuggles. Acra hadn't known she'd been left behind and promised he'd never leave her alone again. Shula saw something odd in that hospital room, something she hadn't really seen much of before; Acra was growing up, a lot smarter than she really gave him credit for, and within herself realized she cared about Acra in ways she couldn't fully explain. They were ore than just as a friend, but she couldn't voice them to him while he was awake. Another fun day of testing, another day where energy was slipping through her fingers until the tests pointed to something important: Shula was beyond saving.
Her lung capacity had decreased to less than 30%, her hear was failing due to the struggle and lack of air, and her body was giving up. They couldn't figure out why she was fading, but being under-staffed and over-full, all the hospital could think to do was give Shula her end of life paperwork. She agreed to not be revived when she slipped, and to donate her remaining good organs, and to keep her in as little pain as possible (which meant upping her pain meds to keep her nearly unconscious most of the time). Seeing her paperwork and knowing what she was headed for, a stranger visiting the room gave Shula the number to a doctor who would come and humanely euthanize her to save her from days of suffering and waiting to die. She spends most of the day considering, and after deciding she'll call him, decides to go spend some time with Spade to enjoy being with her friends a little more before she dies. Not wanting to tell Spade or Acra, she intended her visit with Spade to just be casual and fun; maybe challenge him to chess or Mah Jong, or kick his ass at wheelchair-racing.
Of course, it's hard to hide anything from your friends, especially when that friend was formerly a master detective. It quickly becomes apparent to Spade that Shula is dying and came to say goodbye after she promised to give him her prayer rug. She had seen glimpses of him in the office and after work at the pubs, and seen more of him when the world was being destroyed. There in that hospital room, Shula finally got to see the real Spade Aeries; a man named Sakuya who had shot his lover when she tried to kill him and had been using him all along. Something in that visit and confession changed her mind, Shula promising Spade that she wouldn't close her eyes and would keep fighting to live if he would as she was wheeled out. That was the last time Spade saw Shula in that hospital, as after her treatment Shula took the radio Raistlin had given her and called him. A few hours later she snuck out of the hospital and was picked up by a ninja named Akiha.
After a very long trip, Shula awoke in a laboratory somewhere in Aerugo. Raistlin wasted little time with his dying patient, working quickly to shut off her body's nociceptors and carve alkahestric arrays deep within her body; one to purify her body and bring it to its purest, most perfect state and then hold it almost in stasis, the other of contortion and only for Raistlin's use. He didn't tell Shula what he was doing or give her any hint as to where they may be as he worked to restore her and give her new life, going so far as to transplant new lungs within her. Whole and impervious to infection or chemical harm, Shula now belonged to him and was his to command at the threat of her life. His demands are simple: research. Shula was to be his researcher, his eyes, his pawn, and anything else he asked of her as she searched for information pertaining to human transmutation, philosopher's stones, and how to go about both of these things. With no choice but to obey, Shula was returned to Amestris a few days after she vanished and quickly set to gathering her things and reconnecting with her friends. Acra had already gone South with his family, but Spade was still in Central.
Reunited with Spade, though he knew perfectly well that something was up with her, Shula was unable to tell her boss about where she'd been for the three days that he'd thought she was dead for. Leaving it be for now, she joined him to return to South where many of the militants were regrouping and recovering from their heavy losses and joining in the efforts to build a new South. As it turns out, South was just what everyone needed. Shu had come home finally, and could immerse herself in her meditation, thinking, devotions, study, and diplomacy skills as she helped to ensure the nearest village would play nice with the military moving there again, as well as helping seek and call on people to assist in the building process. South has also been an eye-opening place for her as well, as in a few weeks it has restored any doubted faith in Ishvalla as it brought Csilla back to them after weeks of being missing and presumed dead; it has restored her faith in humanity as she has watched people working together tirelessly to build new homes, shops and facilities to make South into a shining beacon of Amestris; and she has also learned more about herself. She's learned from Stuka that she needs to let go and relax more, letting the small things slide, and from Csilla she has learned to lookin inward more and really think about what she wants in life. Not just as a soldier, but as a person who wants to be happy.
Taking a little friendly advice from Csilla, Shula went to visit Acra at the hotel in the nearby village where he'd been sleeping. Bringing him lunch wasn't that uncommon since they ate together so often, and neither was working on their alchemy together; he with his new doodad, and she making new fire bracelets since Raistlin destroyed her last ones. But as she watched Acra work and demonstrate the new power of his gauntlet, Shula felt the need to share something with him (especially after he kissed her cheek... a first for him), and gave him the ring she and Gustav used to share back and forth for good luck. She wanted him to always be safe and asked that Gustav's spirit protect him. Acra was touched and quickly returned the gesture, giving her a necklace with three stones that had been in his mother's family for generations. Pushing herself to be a bit braver than ever, Shula returned the affection to kiss Acra's forehead; a first for her as she'd never kissed him anywhere before without using her fingertips to transfer it first. She has begun to accept that she honestly and deeply loves Acra, and that though he hasn't said it, he loves her too.
Now Shula is preparing herself for battle once more to help strike at RIOTE when they aren't expecting it and is now more determined than ever to do well, protecting those she cares about and pushing herself as far as she has to in order to find what she needs to perform perfect human transmutation for Raistlin in hopes of earning her freedom so that she can have the life she wants in safety.
The losses in Drachma were devastating to both Amestris and Shula personally. Friends lost, ghosts nipping her heels in battle, and her darling Acra left in a coma, Shula was left feeling terribly lost and rather alone. She had survived while so many around her hadn't; Spade made sure of that, Acra's personal orders from Spade to keep her safe above all else. She'd witnessed him die in the hospital in North City only to come back a moment later, living and breathing through machines. It was a wholly emptying feeling that she couldn't begin to cope with. There was some comfort in that she wasn't the only one lost. Spade wasn't entirely himself either, and after stopping in Central to retrieve his precious Womanizer Mobile, Shula was asked to drive home to South; a first for them both, since everyone and their grandmother knew that nobody but Spade was allowed to drive the near-holy car. And yet, Shula drive it, that afternoon bringing nothing but further confusion, change, and understanding of things far greater than them all.
It was on the drive home that the distant Lieutenant General confessed to Shula further details about the ghost of his ex-lover, and gave Shula Shirley's photograph for safe keeping. It was also when Shula began to tell him the story of her life, trapped in her bedroom and watching the world through her window as she spent every winter waiting for her turn to die. And yet, she seemed so fine now. Shula wasn't coughing at all, despite the chill in the air or how much they moved. She hadn't been sick at all lately. Spade had noticed Shula's frailty over the months working for him, but never once pried, even though he secretly worried that one day he would get a call that she'd died alone in a hospital room somewhere. But what had changed? Furious at not knowing the missing clues and threatening to jump from the moving car, Shula stopped driving to tell him that her story couldn't hurt her or him anymore because she was fine now. She couldn't tell him how or why, but he only needed to know that she was alive and well and could never get sick again.
Confusion led to understanding, only to lead to surprise as Spade did the unexpected and kissed her. Her first real kiss. When Spade had confessed in the hospital so long ago that he loved her, at the time they both thought it had just been of the platonic sort and brought on by the fear that they'd never see each other again. Shula had given her soul to Raistlin in order to come back to where she was loved, never once realizing it was for Spade's love. The man who had loved hundreds of women before her was now showing love to Shula, in the most honest way Spade had ever meant. Dinner that night was odd, Spade once again stating that he loved her and now asking her to tell him she loved him as well. Instead of a verbal confession, however, Shula pulled Spade's head to her breast to let him listen to her heartbeat; the most intimate gift she'd ever given to anyone.
Shula was torn. She still cared deeply for Acra, but didn't know when or even if he'd ever wake up, and she knew that she and Spade had both been keeping themselves at a distance from each other for months, and now they were having to admit what they were both hiding from. It wasn't right. It wasn't proper. It wasn't even allowed by the military's rules. And yet, it was, and neither could deny it. There was a love there between them that was very real and very tangible, and given everything they'd gone against and through together, Shula offered Spade the most sacred thing she could give to anyone: her soul name. The name that her soul carried through every incarnation of life was the most powerful connection Shula could offer, but if Spade was brave enough to let himself love again, then she could be just as brave because he made her so.
The months that followed were long and slow, Shula watching over Acra's sleeping body in the hospital as she worked out her feelings day by day, while simultaneously tending to her duties to South City and still working to keep her bargain with Raistlin. She was becoming a master at keeping up appearances, even though inside Shula was beginning to crumble psychologically. Shula was falling more and more in love with Spade, even as on a hospital visit she was told by Acra's mother that the necklace he'd given her was a sign of intent to marry, like a pre-engagement ring. It wasn't until that fall when Acra finally woke up that she began to understand what was right for her. She loved and cared for Acra, but found he loved her in a way that reminded her too much of how she'd grown up; over-cared for and over-provided for, while all she wanted was her freedom. She did not want to be the rich wife with a pampered life, and even though she knew Acra loved and respected her enough to let her stay in service to the military, Shula did fear that it eventually wouldn't be an option.
But being the General in charge of a major hub of Amestris means that there aren't always enough days off to take care of personal matters as affairs of state come first. It was only a few days after Chancellor Reinhardt had given his speech at the grand opening gala at South City's Floating Garden. Shula had designed the massive floating garden both as a tourist attraction atop the great lake, and as a memorial for all the residents of South City that had died when the city was destroyed, all the civilians and soldiers who'd died in Central's bombings, and those who'd died in the war in Drachma. Its crowning jewel was the ever-burning flame Shula had made at the heart of the largest circle, she herself being asked to light it. The even made for a somber holiday, and the new year was cut short as Shula got a message that one of her soldiers had gone out to investigate a little town, far to the south, where alchemists were supposedly vanishing and never coming back. She herself had signed off to send someone to look into it, but said specifically not to send an alchemist, and yet, that order was disregarded, which resulted in the disappearance of Major Wiebe. Annoyed that her underlings hadn't listened, Shula decided to look into the matter herself.
She hadn't told Spade where she was going, only sending a text message to say she'd be back in a day, that she would be careful, and that if she needed help she'd call. To her, that was enough, and Shula honestly felt that the matter couldn't really have been more than just small town rumors. But after she arrived in Todtnauberg, Shula found quickly that the tiny village tucked away in the mountains bordering Aerugo truly was hiding something far more sinister. Using her middle name, Faizah, she claimed she'd come to the sleepy village looking for work as an alchemist and demonstrated her plant alchemy, making summer flowers burst through the snow. Nearly every house was marked with a hex hanging by the door, but Shula thought this only to be a local custom for good luck or some similar token. She never would have guessed that it was to nullify alchemy on the premises. On invitation to help with a small farm's field, Shula arrived at a crumbling farm house and was quickly taken by surprise, a needle stabbed into her neck and her body thrown down the stairs into the cellar. Unconscious, her body was raided of her State Alchemist watch Hild had awarded to her, and overheard them as her captors realized that they hadn't caught just any freelance alchemist, but the General of South herself! The poison in the needle had no effect on her thanks to Raistlin's array, and slowly Shula came to, immediately fighting for her freedom and demanding the men surrender to her.
Shula was more than a little scared and perturbed that her fire alchemy suddenly didn't work. She was overtaken and handcuffed in the cellar, the watches of many State Alchemists who'd gone missing hanging from the cellar's ceiling in a macabre display of trophies. Several times she tried to escape, coming very close each time, and each time being restrained further until eventually she was chained directly to the floor in a kneeling position. Deprived of food and water, she was tortured slowly, both physically and emotionally, the leader of the cult taking her phone from her to send messages to Spade, first insisting that everything was fine and that she'd be a few more days, and then later that he'd see her soon. The plan was to broadcast a live recording on the Internet for all to see, to demonstrate the power of their nullification array by showing the people how it takes away the power of their “oppressors,” followed by killing Shula live. There were two things the group hadn't counted on, however: that Spade was now looking for Shula, and that Raistlin was already in Todtnauberg, also looking for the missing General. After she'd missed a check-in with one of his informants, information was quickly relayed about her whereabouts. Claiming to be a friend of hers, Raistlin retraced Shula's steps, found her car at the Inn, and made quick work to kill the men sent that night to kill him. One was helpful enough in his short torture to tell Raistlin where the little Ishvallan was being held, and when he showed up at the farmhouse, the horror scene was reversed entirely. Bones were warped at his command, flesh turning on its masters and attacking friends, and one last man left alive connected to Shula to give to her the precious blood she'd lost in days of slow torture and nearly bleeding to death. Physically perfect once more, Shula was ordered to help burn the farm house and shed where all the missing bodies had been left to rot, and was helpless as special Aerugese forces came to the village and left nobody alive. All 650 residents died that cold January night, the village looking like the apocalypse hit as it supposedly suffered a toxic gas lead due to the cultist experiments going on. Shula drove away, ordered to tell nobody lest she die, and expected to check in with Raistlin once more the next day.
She wasn't able to keep that appointment, however.
Shula drove off and stopped, far in the mountains, and cried as she called Spade. He'd arrived in Todtnauberg that morning to find her after spending sleepless days putting the clues together, and was now investigating a giant crime scene and hundreds of bodies as he looked for her. He found both Shula and the tracking bugs planted in her car, Shula wearing clothes she'd never worn before and flecks of blood still caked under her nails and in her scalp that she hadn't been able to scrub free. Shula was alive once more, and that was all that mattered to him as he drove them both back to her loft in South and fell asleep at her side as they both slept for three days. Appointment missed, Shula was more than a little afraid for her life and now for Spade's as well for getting involved. After telling Spade she couldn't leave South to run away to Central with him, Spade cracked, upset and incredibly hurt that she was still trying to hide something from him that was now so big that all those people had to die. Caving, Shula finally confessed to Spade what had really happened to her; how she was suddenly so miraculously healed, the deal with the devil she'd made, and how now as much as she wanted to leave, she belonged to Raistlin and would only live so long as she was useful.
Finally it all made sense to Spade, and as she cried and told Spade she wasn't as strong as he was, the unexpected happened: Spade's fist went through the wall next to her bed in his rage, Spade telling Shula to marry him and he would show her what strength was. Neither of them had expected that at all. Stunned, Shula's answer was very typically Shula, saying she'd marry him when it was all over. A no would have been devastating, but a yes could have been just as bad. From that moment Shula decided to carry on with her research, both of them quiet and trying to not think too hard about the plan they'd need if she were to ever give Raistlin the research he wanted and ensure her survival from it. There was no ring or public announcement, Shula and Spade keeping their engagement very much a secret so as not to cause problems within their respective headquarters or complicate delicate matters with Raistlin while he was still watching her. Acra's necklace was returned to him, the playboy heir retiring from his military career to move to Creta, taking his place in his family to oversee their vast upscale hotel chain.
The wheel of time moved, Shula steadfast in her research while quiet about her secret engagement, telling nobody except for Csilla, who was sworn to secrecy about the whole affair. But human nature is chaotic and the world never quiet for long, RIOTE on the move again as they marched from Drachma into Briggs, overtaking the great fortress as another party moved into Creta, bent on attacking and taking out the strongest places, taking out London before marching straight into Amestris, aiming for Central. It took all of Shula's willpower to not send her soldiers to Central's aid, keeping them instead to defend South as the last stronghold of Amestris as they evacuated Central City and most importantly, the Chancellor. Even though the Chancellor's envoy was attacked, he managed to escape alive, and Central held off RIOTE. But Briggs was now theirs, and Shula left to plan to prevent such a disaster from happening again if she could. Tunnels connecting Central to South began as a safety precaution, to move armies and dignitaries without further incident.
After the war, a quick trip to Creta was taken with Csilla to return the car that had been left in her care, where Shula got to meet Csilla's own little secret in the form of a grumpy knight that seemed to be her on/off boyfriend. Elastor was pissy, but not too bad, and in trying to help him get closer to her best friend Shula found that they had a heavy handful in common with each other, Shula giving him the advice to either be honest about his condition since the war or work harder at covering his tracks to keep others from letting on. Overall it was a rather fun trip, only to be followed by a significantly less fun one as after returning home Shula stole off to the Great Desert alone, driving all the way to the old Xerxes ruins. In the desolate area was Raistlin, and though Shula had come with research to give him, she had been for some time padding her research in order to delay finding the final answer all in hopes of prolonging her life. Raistlin had caught on that she was dawdling, and roughly gave the Ishvallan a final ultimatum: give the finished research to him, or a new array within her body would kill her soon. If she gave it to him before the due date, he would deactivate it. Terrified, she had no choice but to agree.
The pressure was weighing on both Shula and Spade, the young woman noticing that her love was more than a little tense and dour, even toward his own men. It wasn't until an afternoon off and Shula spending her day in Central that Spade came home, flowers in hand (that he'd picked himself), and came to understand that Shula had finished her research to Raistlin. The secrets of life, death, and the universe themselves were at Shula's disposal, the alchemist now fully prepared to make a perfect Philosopher's Stone and perform the forbidden act of human transmutation. This was far too big a power to turn over to their enemies who could use it to level the whole of Amestris, and far too dangerous for Shula to surrender lest she die once her task was completed. A plan was formulated; Shula would tell her informant that she had a stone ready for Raistlin, and a fake stone would be given to Raistlin instead of a true stone. Shula would have to convince the Aerugese General on her own that the stone was legitimate and that he should let her live; Spade would then use his alkahestry to erase Raistlin's memory of the stone, Shula, and everything to do with her. He couldn't attack what never happened in his memory. The plan was so simple and could work, but at best it was only a 50/50 shot and could still fail with so many variables.
Days before their meeting, Shula stopped eating, anxious and afraid, telling Spade of the new array that was set in her body that would kill her and how she only needed to be near Raistlin for him to have power over her. Spade was determined that they wouldn't fail, however, and left the house behind Shula, dressed as an Aerugese special ops agent to blend in. As the helicopter came for her and went to search the area, Spade's alkahestry began to take effect, convincing the other soldiers that he was one of theirs and part of their retrieval team. The flight was agonizing, Shula and Spade careful not to interact lest they break the spell, and once inside the Aerugese base in Kyoto, they waited for the dark General. Shula presented the stone to him and began to plead for her freedom, insisting she hadn't betrayed him and that she'd never be in his way again; all she wanted was to marry and have a family of her own. Raistlin removed the arrays within her body that granted him power, but as soon as he'd finished Spade made his move, fueled by rage and working to wipe every trace of Shula's existence from the man's memory as she went at the computers and files, taking all of the research and notes she'd given him, leaving him at square one. The only remaining clue was too small for any of them to think of or notice: Shula's dogtags that Raistlin had taken from her that day in South when she'd been left behind. Upon returning to Amestris, Shula stayed with Spade, scared, relieved, and overwhelmed that it was finally over and cared for him until he'd recovered from exhausting his alkahestric ability so much.
The world was a different place now that Shula's freedom was in place, the girl beyond relieved that her body was her own once more. Even though Christmas still wasn't a holiday Shula really celebrated, that winter was a much happier one, Spade drunkenly announcing to all of Central and South headquarters that they were engaged, news spreading like wildfire. The emergency tunnels connecting the two cities were nearly completed, and Shula made her choice to retire from the military after she was wed, to ensure the country's best interests. Her vows would dictate that her duty above all else be to her husband, and in a crisis she wasn't sure she'd be strong enough to maintain her military duty above that to Spade. Handing Chancellor Reinhardt the papers were difficult, but the man did work out with the tiny General to at least stay on with the military, even if not running South so that she could be with Spade.
As spring came, it was decided to have another festival. Whoever decided that needed to be smacked, but there wasn't anything Shula, Spade, or anyone could do about it other than try to get through the terrible affair that had killed so many before and nearly killed Shula the last time it came to town. This one was meant to be special, as foreign heads were coming as special guests, all there to see the rocket ship built by Carraig. They could supposedly fly off the planet and touch the stars, and they wanted to show the world what the neutral island could do. But that wasn't everyone's plan, someone moving to sabotage the flight, intending to blow it up and rain fire and shrapnel on all the guests of the fair. As Spade worked to dismantle the bomb, Shula ran to tell Hans, while Alisa went after the saboteur. A man named Shinku. The name had only come up once before in Spade's tales of detective work past, a criminal he'd put away long ago. Now free, he was making his mark. Even though the day ended miraculously peacefully, Spade was uneasy, the game now on between the two brilliant men. Despite Shula's attempts to comfort her love that it would be alright, she had no idea at the time just how cunning Shinku was or how far he would go to enact his revenge against Spade Aeries.
REVISE
Shu, this is for lvl 3 right? I see Dai approved you for lvl 2, but didn't catch this:
For lvl 2 you need to color all your changes a different color (this includes the two new lvl 2 alchemic abilities).
And then for lvl 3 you color your new history another different color and your one new alchemic ability.
Make sense? You can use Reila's App for an example. See I used three different colors?
Re: Brighton, Shula
(continued updates from page 1)
On invitation from her handsome, grumpy knight, Csilla retired from the Amestrian military to move to Creta to be with her own love, Shula promising to come see her new house as soon as she could, Csilla promising to return to Amestris for Shula's wedding. The event had been put off for now, Spade more worried what Shinku was up to than anything else, insisting that the man was incredibly dangerous. He'd never even been that worried about Aurel, so for him to be that concerned got Shula's attention, understanding, and patience. There was a new Emperor in Xing, too, which seemed odd. They hadn't heard from Ace in a while, and since Spade was the rightful heir if he'd stepped down the throne should have gone to him. And yet, this man was now ruling. Shula didn't know that Spade had gone to Xing that June day, or that her fiance had gotten an urgent message about his brother's present condition. Shula was working in South still, content knowing that someday they would be together and could relax. The afternoon seemed ordinary enough, Shula even planning to leave work early and see if Spade was up for dinner together (unaware of his departure), when she was told there was a visitor for her. The man who came to the third floor of South HQ was dressed in a Cretan uniform, and Shula knew that their countries were on improving terms, and she personally was favored by Dietrich. But suddenly the man attacked, and revealed himself to be Shinku.
He told her how he'd killed Ace and had sent Spade Ace's head, enraging Shula as she moved to begin to fight back. She hadn't expected a second visitor that day as Axel, Spade's former student and current second in command dropping in. He'd only come to return a sari to Shula, but suddenly was swept up in the fight as Shinku began to assault everyone in sight, killing guards, secretaries, and planning to make Shula suffer before he killed her, all to make Spade suffer. He cut the water line in the room, ensuring that Shula couldn't use any of her alchemies to defend herself. Finding Axel there only excited the monster of a man, gleeful that he could attack two parts of Spade's heart in one place. He also teased how while they fought him, there was a bomb hidden in the parking lot with enough C4 to take out most of the building. Soldiers were ordered desperately to find the bomb, Shinku attacking Shula after she shot him. She couldn't have known that his chimeric claws were venomous, her body pinned to the wall as he dug his fingers in, releasing neurotoxin. He told her how she would suffer, stage by stage; how first she'd burn with a feverless, internal heat, and then cough until she coughed blood, like she had all her life. Then would come searing, screaming pain and hallucinations, followed by numbness, and unconsciousness as her body's organs shut down, and at last “sweet, everlasting death.” Just to be a good sport, Shinku gave Shula the antidote to his venom, but told her it would only give her a 30% chance to live.
As Shinku engaged Axel to fight once more, more shots rang out, and Shula's cellphone was ringing. In the midst of the fight, Spade was calling her from Xing, either to tell her what he'd found out about Ace or to warn her of the monster who had already killed her. Swallowing it down, Shula let the phone ring, not answering it, determined that if she were going to die she would at least keep Spade from having to listen to it over the phone and try to spare him as much as possible. The building shook as the bomb went off, Shinku escaping through a window and a spray of bullets as nearly a third of South HQ was leveled. Axel got Shula out and took her to Central City's main hospital himself, hurrying to try and save his best friend's woman.
That afternoon was agonizing, Shula burning with heat that no medicine could cool and coughing blood until her ribs ached. She was frightened and alone, doctors not letting anyone in to see her and not telling anyone which room was the General's lest the news come hounding her. All she wanted was Spade. Even though Shinku had given Shula 24 hours to live, her little body fought hard, and as the next afternoon came around the hallucinations were in full swing, first Shula seeing the ghost of her dear Gustav in the room, waiting patiently to collect her and take her to the afterlife, and then finally seeing her beloved Spade. Surrounded by the fireflies she'd given Spade as her wedding gift, she gave her bracelets and engagement ring to him, swearing her wedding vows for him then and there, even though she wasn't entirely sure if he was even real or not. Shula gave her vows and promised she'd find a way back to him. Shula even sang for the figment a little of the song she'd been practicing Cretan for. 24 hours passed, and Shula was still alive, but unconscious, her body fighting organ failure as the doctors struggled to make Shinku's antidote strong enough to save her. Nearly 50 hours after Shinku had attacked her, Shula's body finally gave up in a sad irony that there was a time Spade had feared getting a call that his Shula would die alone in a hospital room somewhere, and now the call being sent to him was declaring that very same, nearly-forgotten fear from long ago.
On June 5th, Shula Brighton died, alone and waiting for her love to come for her. Her body was left whole and intact, and buried soon after for all of Amestris to see. Shula Brighton, the Fire Dancer Alchemist, and Sweetheart of Amestris, was laid to rest in South City, wearing a white and gold beaded lehenga and sari with Spade's engagement ring, waiting for the wedding and happily ever after that would never come.
TRIVIA:
→ Shula suffered from a condition called Common Variable Immuno Deficiency, or CVID. The disease lowers her body's immune resistance to diseases and infections, resulting in her frequently being ill, primarily from respiratory infections. The tips of her lungs are rather scarred from years of illness, and it can be heard when she gasps for air after coughing or has to pause for a moment to catch her breath. There is no cure, but two days a month she slips off for treatments that help her lead a relatively normal life and buy herself some time.
→Shula still holds to her ideals and refuses to use her alchemy for lethal purposes, even in battle.
→ She secretly wants kids and had testing done at a fertility clinic to see if she could have healthy, normal children. Some of her eggs are still frozen there.
→ Shula's human transmutation and philosopher's stone research were never destroyed; instead, she hid them.
→ The House of Pi is her fave haunt with Csilla for pastries and cute gay boys to flirt with.
→ Her favorite flowers are snowdrops, lotuses, and edelweiss
→ She died alone.
→ Fluent in Amestrian and Katishan Ishvalan (regional dialect that is Hindi-based). She speaks enough Aerugese to get by, and is learning to butcher Cretan
He'd never even been that worried about Aurel, so for him to be that concerned got Shula's attention, understanding, and patience. There was a new Emperor in Xing, too, which seemed odd. They hadn't heard from Ace in a while, and since Spade was the rightful heir if he'd stepped down the throne should have gone to him. And yet, this man was now ruling. Shula didn't know that Spade had gone to Xing that June day, or that her fiance had gotten an urgent message about his brother's present condition. Shula was working in South still, content knowing that someday they would be together and could relax. The afternoon seemed ordinary enough, Shula even planning to leave work early and see if Spade was up for dinner together (unaware of his departure), when she was told there was a visitor for her. The man who came to the third floor of South HQ was dressed in a Cretan uniform, and Shula knew that their countries were on improving terms, and she personally was favored by Dietrich. But suddenly the man attacked, and revealed himself to be Shinku.
He told her how he'd killed Ace and had sent Spade Ace's head, enraging Shula as she moved to begin to fight back. She hadn't expected a second visitor that day as Axel, Spade's former student and current second in command dropping in. He'd only come to return a sari to Shula, but suddenly was swept up in the fight as Shinku began to assault everyone in sight, killing guards, secretaries, and planning to make Shula suffer before he killed her, all to make Spade suffer. He cut the water line in the room, ensuring that Shula couldn't use any of her alchemies to defend herself. Finding Axel there only excited the monster of a man, gleeful that he could attack two parts of Spade's heart in one place. He also teased how while they fought him, there was a bomb hidden in the parking lot with enough C4 to take out most of the building. Soldiers were ordered desperately to find the bomb, Shinku attacking Shula after she shot him. She couldn't have known that his chimeric claws were venomous, her body pinned to the wall as he dug his fingers in, releasing neurotoxin. He told her how she would suffer, stage by stage; how first she'd burn with a feverless, internal heat, and then cough until she coughed blood, like she had all her life. Then would come searing, screaming pain and hallucinations, followed by numbness, and unconsciousness as her body's organs shut down, and at last “sweet, everlasting death.” Just to be a good sport, Shinku gave Shula the antidote to his venom, but told her it would only give her a 30% chance to live.
As Shinku engaged Axel to fight once more, more shots rang out, and Shula's cellphone was ringing. In the midst of the fight, Spade was calling her from Xing, either to tell her what he'd found out about Ace or to warn her of the monster who had already killed her. Swallowing it down, Shula let the phone ring, not answering it, determined that if she were going to die she would at least keep Spade from having to listen to it over the phone and try to spare him as much as possible. The building shook as the bomb went off, Shinku escaping through a window and a spray of bullets as nearly a third of South HQ was leveled. Axel got Shula out and took her to Central City's main hospital himself, hurrying to try and save his best friend's woman.
That afternoon was agonizing, Shula burning with heat that no medicine could cool and coughing blood until her ribs ached. She was frightened and alone, doctors not letting anyone in to see her and not telling anyone which room was the General's lest the news come hounding her. All she wanted was Spade. Even though Shinku had given Shula 24 hours to live, her little body fought hard, and as the next afternoon came around the hallucinations were in full swing, first Shula seeing the ghost of her dear Gustav in the room, waiting patiently to collect her and take her to the afterlife, and then finally seeing her beloved Spade. Surrounded by the fireflies she'd given Spade as her wedding gift, she gave her bracelets and engagement ring to him, swearing her wedding vows for him then and there, even though she wasn't entirely sure if he was even real or not. Shula gave her vows and promised she'd find a way back to him. Shula even sang for the figment a little of the song she'd been practicing Cretan for. 24 hours passed, and Shula was still alive, but unconscious, her body fighting organ failure as the doctors struggled to make Shinku's antidote strong enough to save her. Nearly 50 hours after Shinku had attacked her, Shula's body finally gave up in a sad irony that there was a time Spade had feared getting a call that his Shula would die alone in a hospital room somewhere, and now the call being sent to him was declaring that very same, nearly-forgotten fear from long ago.
On June 5th, Shula Brighton died, alone and waiting for her love to come for her. Her body was left whole and intact, and buried soon after for all of Amestris to see. Shula Brighton, the Fire Dancer Alchemist, and Sweetheart of Amestris, was laid to rest in South City, wearing a white and gold beaded lehenga and sari with Spade's engagement ring, waiting for the wedding and happily ever after that would never come.
TRIVIA:
→ Shula suffered from a condition called Common Variable Immuno Deficiency, or CVID. The disease lowers her body's immune resistance to diseases and infections, resulting in her frequently being ill, primarily from respiratory infections. The tips of her lungs are rather scarred from years of illness, and it can be heard when she gasps for air after coughing or has to pause for a moment to catch her breath. There is no cure, but two days a month she slips off for treatments that help her lead a relatively normal life and buy herself some time.
→Shula still holds to her ideals and refuses to use her alchemy for lethal purposes, even in battle.
→ She secretly wants kids and had testing done at a fertility clinic to see if she could have healthy, normal children. Some of her eggs are still frozen there.
→ Shula's human transmutation and philosopher's stone research were never destroyed; instead, she hid them.
→ The House of Pi is her fave haunt with Csilla for pastries and cute gay boys to flirt with.
→ Her favorite flowers are snowdrops, lotuses, and edelweiss
→ She died alone.
→ Fluent in Amestrian and Katishan Ishvalan (regional dialect that is Hindi-based). She speaks enough Aerugese to get by, and is learning to butcher Cretan
