CASE FILE: Alkahestrist/RIOTE militant
"And with every new thing, comes something new to devour it."
→ Emmelin Kassanov
→ Azov, Drachma
DATE OF BIRTH:
→ December 31, 1990
→ Emmelin has long and wispy chestnut hair. The tresses reach well past her shoulder and hold a slight wave in them. Normally her hair is pulled up into a ponytail that reaches the lower part of her neck. Her dark bangs frame her round and gentle face. Her eyes are hazel and slim under her rounded glasses. Her skin is light and pale, with few to no blemishes or marks on them- except for her hands which have light scarring on the palms.
As for clothes, Emmelin likes to dress nice. She tends to wear button up blouses that fit her tight (Not overly so) and some nice pants to go with. Occasionally she wears a lab coat, but that's usually only when she's working. She wears flat shoes normally, but can sport up to 3 inches if needed. Another outfit she wears is a jacket over a white button up blouse with tight beige pants and a brown belt. Her boots meet up to her knees and are a dark brown-black color. She stands straight and walks light and gracefully.
→ Emmelin is a smart woman, but most people wouldn't judge it. She has a problem 'applying' herself to situations and enjoys to push the subjects aside. It's not that she can't take things seriously, it's just she rather think on more positive aspects. Life is too short to wallow in pity. In result, she tends to look like an ditz. Oddly enough, she doesn't mind that, because that means less people will bother her. She honestly gets tired of having to answer questions. Acting stupid is the best way to avoid that. However, if she knows the situation is serious, then she knows to take it seriously. She isn't overly hyper, but rather optimistic in her view.
Clumsy is a good word to describe her with. It's as if she has two left hands at the time. Oddly enough her walking is graceful enough, but her hand-eye coordination is extremely poor. She could drop something in a second, but stand on one leg for three hours. She has a sense of balance, but for some reasons holding objects often end in her getting harmed in some form (usually dropped upon her feet). This is probably because she lacks a lot of feeling in her hands.
Tends to burn things; don't leave her alone with the oven. If you do, it's likely the house will burn down and at the least so will dinner. It's not that she can't cook, it's just she's often too scatter-brained to remember she IS cooking. When she does remember she gets in a huffy and rushes about in attempts to save whatever she's cooking. To help with this- she now has an egg timer she uses. However at times, she still forgets. Don't give her fire.
When she's finally accepted her feelings, she is a very passionate woman. Emmelin is extremely dedicated and loyal. The true her shows when she's calm and collected. She can hold an intelligent conversation and even contribute. Her fears and anxieties are a bit easier to see when these walls come down and it's much easier to see she isn't always what she seems. She likes to protect people and help when she can, but if she doesn't know you, she doesn't normally go out of her way to help out. It's easy to see that Emmelin is sort of a loner in how she feels so isolated from earth. Her optimism is towards everything except herself usually. "I doubt I'll get better, but at least I can help if needed."
She doesn't portray how she honestly feels often and lies about what's bothering her. She believes she has to hold everything in. She doesn't understand how other people seem to easily portray what they want or how they feel. In some ways she's even jealous that some people can be so close to one another. Relationships in any fashion are hard for her to understand. Mainly she's afraid of losing which would equal to pain.
Emmelin honestly feels hopeless with herself. She gets so frustrated when things go wrong because she believes in perfection. Everything has to be perfect on the first try and otherwise will break her mentally. She ultimately sets the bar too high on herself and after her failures she beats herself up about it, inwardly. Not many people would be able to notice this, though because she hides everything under her mask of carefree-ness.
She gets nervous when people get close to her (physically or emotionally) and often tries to ruin the moment so she doesn't have to get hurt. She has a hard time being around things that are 'too exciting' it causes her nerves to perk and she feels like she can't do anything right. As well, she has a healthy fear of pain. If she doesn't want something to happen; rather than speak on it- she reacts. These reactions are often unpredictable since when nerves start- her brain is out the window. An example of her response. If someone is trying to kiss her and she doesn't want them to, she quickly puts something in the way (be it a paper or a glass).
As odd as it is in modern day, Emmelin never really swears. When she's angry she tried to remain silent as to not say something she'll regret. However, if she were to swear; it would likely be calling someone getting on her nerve's a 'bastard'. She rarely uses other curse words.
Emmelin isn't easy to get mad. She does get annoyed easily, but she has a hard time telling people 'no' or 'get lost'. She tries to subtly hint and when that doesn't work she tries to sneak away.
→ Bittersweet things, spicy things, tacos, cowbells, success, the number 8, the number 11, the number 1, patterns and symmetry, sorting things, keeping organized, starry skies, butterflies, cooking, baking, experimenting with new recipes
→ Failing, dandelions, swearing, burning things, forgetting things, losing things, Most numbers that aren't 8, 1 or 11 (No this does not mean she likes numbers that are a mix of 8s and 1s. SHE DOES however have no problem if it is a symmetric pattern: 181 for example, crooked things, things not being put back where they are supposed to go, tripping, dropping things, people being in a rush, wasps
→ Emmelin and her brother lived with their parents in the slums of Azov. They were both born and raised there. The neighbors were kind- oddly there was little crime or trouble in the small town. Everyone helped out when they could and even the menial things that the children did were big in the eyes of the parents. Emmelin was younger by one year. Raised with her brother, they learned how to be happy with what they had- despite how little it was. Everyone knew how to hide your sadness in the happiness of others.
"Even when you have nothing, remember your brother is always here for you." His smile was always warming no matter how bad things were. Emmelin relied on her brother entirely as she grew. It wasn't that her parents didn't love her- they were both attentive and caring, but she was just attached at the hip. In some ways her brother raised her- but by his choice. It was strange because there was only a year difference between them.
As the years went by, their parents managed enough to get an education for both- however the school wasn't exactly a 'no discipline' school. Easy to say that over the next year she learned how to not use her right hand. It wasn't perfect. She would never amount to anything unless she was perfect. That's when her obsession stepped in.
Needless to say Emmelin slowed down a bit in attempts to perfect everything she did. If she didn't get it right on the first try she would get beat. After a while- she paid so much attention to the first time she did something that there was no second try. She couldn't handle the rejection so she strove to do better than it every time. Whether it was tests or simply playing a game, it had to be perfect.
Slowly the obsession began sneaking into her everyday routine. If something was cracked- she fixed it or threw it away. If a picture was crooked, she had to fix it. It was compulsive. If ever she tried to resist, a feeling would clench in her stomach and make her nauseus. She would HAVE to fix it or she felt almost as if she'd go insane. Her head would buzz with the annoying noises of 'It's crooked. It's imperfect.' The temptations got too much and she was compelled to fix whatever it was. This didn't matter if it was someone's tie (sure she would ask permission first) or if it was a cake in a window (If it was the cake, she'd buy it and get rid of it through eating or throwing away so that she wouldn't have to look at it- nor would anyone else).
It was one day that things became far too dark. Neither Emmelin nor her brother knew why, but a group of alchemists came to their house and harassed them for the night. Only the children were home that night, so her brother locked the doors. The two huddled in the basement and cowered. Neither of them knew how to fight or what to do. The best they could do was wait for their parents to come home.
Unfortunately, the men weren't too happy with the children. That was when the smoke started through the door and fire flashed from underneath. Both were soon up to their feet and bolted towards separate doors.
"I can't move it!" her brother called out. His hands pushed on the metal door.
Emmelin panicked and her hands grasped at the doornob, only to scream in pain seconds later. Her brother was there in seconds. "Not this way," he whispered and grabbed her wrist. "Quick- there's a window."
Ten minutes later and the fire had gotten into the basement and her brother was struggling to get her out. Coughing and hacking; their lungs were getting filled with thick black smoke. "Don't die." Who was speaking? She couldn't tell. Her voice was hoarse with a groan and soon black slipped over her. Emmelin collapsed.
When she came to, Emmelin was in a hospital bed. Her vision blurred into focus to see her brother's wrapped body. Her hand reached out and she tried to speak. Words couldn't be found through silent understanding. Her brother had saved her- and in result he got pretty badly burnt up. The two were quiet, but general admiration for life was obvious.
Seeing her brother's scars made her realize what she wanted to do. Emmelin wanted to figure out a way to heal him. Even though he said he had no problems with it and that it was okay her drive made her push forward. Her brother was not perfect- she would make him perfect like he had once been. Her mind dove straight into studies and research and soon after- alkahestry. She would do not much else as her brother went about his own studies and classes.
Upon her graduation day, she was ready. She pulled her brother aside and let him know, but things didn't go as planned. They began to argue. Again he tried to explain it was okay and he didn't want that, but she retorted with how much she wanted to. Eventually things escaladed and the two ended up parting ways. He left and the two didn't speak again beside fleeting letters to ask how they were.
Emmelin was disheartened but proceeded to earn her doctrate. Even if she couldn't make her brother perfect, she could perfect the immune systems of others and make ammends that way, she supposed. It was kind of lonely. Luckily she had her patients to keep her company, which was better than being alone. Well- that was until the disease broke out. Immediately Emmelin was dispatched into doing work with groups to find a cure and help those dying.
